It is the season for sickness: stomach bug going around - WTVG

Image
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - ProMedica Urgent Care for Kids says it is seeing a large number of children with a stomach bug caused by the common Norovirus. Symptoms to watch out for include vomiting, diarrhea and some abdominal pain. Stephanie Blanchard with ProMedica says this stomach bug is lasting between 24 and 48 hours and it should go away on its own with the help of rest and fluids. Dehydration is the largest worry and if you are not seeing any improvement in your child after two days, a trip to the doctor is recommended. "Any condition that you call your primary care physician and you can't get in within the week, utilize us. That's what we're here for -- to get you guys in to be seen quicker rather than later especially if you just have that instinct of hey something's not right bring them into the urgent care. That's when we encourage patients to utilize us the most," said Blanchard. According to Blanchard, COVID-19 numbers are down in Lucas County and

Early MSSA Infection in CF Children Linked to Later Lung Decline |... - Cystic Fibrosis News Today

Image
In children with cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic lung infection with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) before age 4 was associated with poor lung function by age 8, a small study concluded. Early infection was also linked to an increased risk later of lung exacerbations, or a rapid worsening of symptoms. The researchers noted that additional studies are needed to determine whether early chronic MSSA infection causes these later lung problems. The study, " Association between early chronic methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus colonization and lung function in children with cystic fibrosis ," was published in Pediatric Pulmonology . Recommended Reading In CF, thick mucus accumulating in the lungs gives rise to cycles of infection and inflammation, which can lead to irreversible airway damage. S. aureus is one of the earliest and most common disease-causing bacteria isolated from the a

If you've got a cheese addiction, you may want to switch to the "hard stuff," particularly if you're pregnant. That's because soft cheeses are one of the foods most likely to cause listeriosis. According to the CDC, listeriosis is a relatively uncommon but potentially very serious form of foodborne illness caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. There are about 1,600 cases of listeriosis in the United States each year, although many more may go undocumented. That's because most individuals' bodies can clear the bacteria before they cause any harm. Pregnant women, newborns, those over 65, and people with weakened immune systems, however, can all experience symptomatic listeriosis. In these vulnerable groups, the bacteria spread from the GI tract to other parts of the body (known as invasive listeriosis), which requires hospitalization and can become life-threatening. The CDC noted that symptoms of listeriosis appear one to four weeks after exposu

Group B Strep: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention - Verywell Health

Image
Group B Streptococcus (group B strep or GBS) is a bacterium that occurs naturally in the gastrointestinal and genital tracts (vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes). Since it lives in the vagina and rectum of some people, GBS can be passed from the pregnant parent to the baby during labor. Although the bacterium is not usually harmful to adults, it can cause serious side effects in infants. People who are positive for GBS will need to be treated with antibiotics during labor to help prevent the baby from being infected. This article will discuss the cause, symptoms, risk factors, complications, and prevention of group B strep. LumiNola / E+ / Getty Images Causes Bacteria are microscopic, single-celled organisms that live in the environment. For example, Streptococcus (strep) is a type of bacteria found inside and outside humans and animals. Not to be confused with group A strep, which is responsible for strep throat, group B strep is sometimes f

Salmonella Meningitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment - Healthline

Bacterial meningitis is a serious class of infectious meningitis diseases affecting the membranes of the brain and spinal cord. It can cause permanent body or brain damage and in some cases can be rapidly fatal. One rare type of bacterial meningitis is salmonella meningitis, which is caused by Salmonella bacteria. Salmonella meningitis is a kind of bacterial meningitis. Salmonella meningitis is an uncommon but serious complication of salmonella infection. Many different strains of Salmonella bacteria live in animals' intestines. This bacteria can cause infections in people following their exposure to contaminated food, water, soil, or surfaces that harbor feces containing the bacteria. It can also be spread person-to-person via poor hand hygiene. Salmonella infections vary in their severity and can cause a range of symptoms including abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. When caused by food poisoning, it's rarely life threatening. The most dangerous Salmonella strains can

Watermelon stomach: Symptoms, causes, and treatment - Medical News Today

Image
Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE), or watermelon stomach, is a rare condition that causes the stomach lining to bleed. The hallmark of the condition is red stripes on the stomach lining, which give the appearance of a watermelon. Although some people will experience no symptoms, others will feel tired and notice blood in their stool. Read on to learn more about watermelon stomach, including its symptoms, causes, and treatments. Watermelon stomach is a rare condition that affects a person's stomach lining. It makes the blood vessels within the stomach lining fragile and likely to bleed. Research from 2019 notes that watermelon stomach is responsible for about 4% of non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Non-variceal means that it is not due to varices, which are abnormally enlarged veins. When a person has watermelon stomach, vertical red stripes develop along the inside of their stomach. This makes the stomach lining look like the outside of a watermelon. Watermelon sto

New study explores role of key protein in regulating infection by salmonella - ASU News Now

August 3, 2022 Infectious diseases continue to ravage human society and remain a leading cause of illness and death worldwide. Improving therapies to treat these afflictions will require a better understanding of the intricate dance between infectious pathogens and the human cells they infect. In new research appearing in the journal mSphere, Arizona State University researcher Cheryl Nickerson, her former graduate student Karla Franco Meléndez and colleagues explore an understudied aspect of the infection process — the physical forces acting on invasive bacterial cells during infection inside the body — which can trigger profound alterations in the behavior of pathogens and alter disease progression. Salmonella bacteria invade human intestinal

Several cities are reporting cases of not just Covid-19 but other viral fevers such as seasonal flu (H1N1) and dengue. In fact, with overlapping symptoms and sometimes simultaneous cases, people are wondering what they should do when they develop fever. There was a surge in Covid-19 numbers in Delhi this month but there are also reports of viral infections like dengue and H1N1. This is happening in other cities too. What are you seeing in your clinics right now? After a lull, there has been an increase in Covid-19 cases this month. And if anybody comes in for consultation with fever, it is more likely than not that they have Covid-19. Seven out of 10 patients have Covid-19. But increasingly, we are also seeing cases of flu and dengue. We are even reporting cases of malaria – maybe three or four cases a week. Then there are always some cases of typhoid. 6 Causes and Triggers of Cold Sores - Healthline

Image
Cold sores are painful, open blisters that develop in or around your mouth, usually on your lips. Once you've had a cold sore, it's likely you will have more over the course of your life.  That's because cold sores are caused by a virus known as herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). After you get an HSV infection, the virus travels to nearby nerve cells where it can lie dormant for long periods of time. When triggered, the virus can start replicating again, causing another cold sore. It can be hard to predict what triggers a cold sore, and they might seem to appear at the worst times. But research has identified some common triggers. We've partnered with Burt's Bees, known for its lip balms and other lip care products, to explore the triggers of cold sores, and help you prevent and prepare for future flare-ups. Antibiotics might not be the best answer for C. diff - Scope

Antibiotics might not be the best answer for C. diff A new testing tool helps doctors avoid unnecessary antibiotic treatment in patients with diarrhea and suspected C. diff infection. Author Krista Conger Published on August 19, 2022 August 19, 2022 Diarrhea seems sometimes like a forbidden topic, something to be whispered about or referred to with euphemisms. For most people, it's a passing inconvenience, but it can be a life-threatening situation for others. Diarrheal disease -- which stems from poor sanitation, unclean drinking water, and other infections -- is a leading cause of death globally in children under 5. It can also be caused by the use of antibiotics to treat unrelated infections. In the United States, antibiotic-associated diarrhea is a serious problem, particularly for older or immunocompromised people. Iro
