In this Article What's worse: Vomiting or diarrhea? Trick question: Neither. Both involve spending far too much time in the bathroom, and when you have them simultaneously, well, that's a whole other level of trouble. Experiencing vomiting and diarrhea together is usually due to a viral illness or bacterial infection that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) system. That said, it could be something else is going on. We asked a few experts to give us the low-down on this digestive double-whammy—here's what they said. What Causes Vomiting and Diarrhea at the Same Time? Morning-after' pill recommended to reduce spread of STIs - UW Medicine Newsroom

Image
A common antibiotic is poised to become a "morning-after" pill to reduce the spread of chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea among populations at higher risk for contracting those bacterial infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week issued a preliminary recommendation for doxycycline to be prescribed to members of two groups — trans women and men who have sex with men — who also have experienced at least one sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the previous year and who are at ongoing risk to acquire an STI. Preventive doxycycline is "the best new intervention that's been identified for STI prevention for quite a long time," said Dr. Connie Celum, a professor of global health and medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. "Every year for the last six or seven years, there's been an increase in bacterial STIs in the U.S. So the current approach of testing and treating is just not enough."

Gills Onions has voluntarily recalled a selection of its fresh diced onion products following reports of salmonella poisoning across 22 states that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says are linked to the company's pre-cut vegetables. In a company announcement posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website Monday, the Oxnard, California-based producer said its products "have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella." The report uncovers the most dangerous candy in America for tooth health, and which candy parents hate most. Dentists explain how to get your sweet fix without damaging your teeth and gums. Assessing the global risk of typhoid outbreaks caused by extensively ... - Nature.com

Abstract Since its emergence in 2016, extensively drug resistant (XDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi ( S . Typhi) has become the dominant cause of typhoid fever in Pakistan. The establishment of sustained XDR S . Typhi transmission in other countries represents a major public health threat. We show that the annual volume of air travel from Pakistan strongly discriminates between countries that have and have not imported XDR S . Typhi in the past, and identify a significant association between air travel volume and the rate of between-country movement of the H58 haplotype of S . Typhi from fitted phylogeographic models. Applying these insights, we analyze flight itinerary data cross-referenced with model-based estimates of typhoid fever incidence to identify the countries at highest risk of importation and sustained onward transmission of XDR S . Typhi. Future outbreaks of XDR typhoid are most likely to occur in countries that can support efficient local S . Typhi transmission and
