More than 40% of restaurant foodborne illness outbreaks caused by sick workers: CDC - ABC News

Image
Sick workers were behind a plurality of foodborne illness outbreaks and contamination in the U.S., new federal data shows. In a report published Tuesday afternoon, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at outbreaks across 25 state and local health departments from 2017 to 2019. They found that among outbreaks where a contributing factor was identified, four in 10 -- or 41% -- were caused by food contamination from ill or infectious employees. This included handlers, workers or preparers making either gloved or barehanded contact with food. "If a food worker stays on the job while sick and does not wash his or her hands carefully after using the toilet, the food worker can spread germs by touching food,' the CDC writes on its website. Of managers who were interviewed, 91.7% said their restaurant or establishment had policies requiring food workers to notify their manager when they were ill. Signs and Symptoms of a Stomach Virus - Yahoo News

Image
Olga Rolenko/Getty Images Medically reviewed by Jay N. Yepuri, MD A stomach virus, also known as viral gastroenteritis, is a condition that causes symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Norovirus, the most common cause of stomach viruses, causes an estimated 19 to 21 million stomach viruses each year. You may also hear someone call a stomach virus the "stomach flu," but it is not a flu like influenza is. Stomach virus symptoms are generally similar to other gastroenteritis symptoms. Gastroenteritis is inflammation in your stomach and intestinal lining. You usually experience symptoms about 12 to 48 hours after you come into contact with a virus. Symptoms are often acute, meaning they begin suddenly and last a short period of time. They typically resolve within one week. While unpleasant, stomach virus symptoms usually resolve on their own. A trip to the optician's turned into a shocking medical discovery for a 45-year-old mother of three, who found out she was harbouring a large brain tumour instead of what she thought was an eye infection. Marcia, a company director from Oxford, woke up one day to blurry vision which she initially dismissed but as her vision worsened, she decided to get her eyes checked at Specsavers in Cowley. The optician was so alarmed by what they saw that she was referred to John Radcliffe hospital, where doctors confirmed the discover of a 'massive brain tumour' that could have cost Marcia her sight if left untreated. I was struggling to drive. "They told me they thought it was an eye infection and they gave me some antibiotics - it didn't improve anything and in January I called back and ...
