HSE publish list of salmonella symptoms to look out for after Kinder outbreak - Irish Mirror

A salmonella outbreak has been confirmed in Ireland, after at least 10 people fell ill after eating Kinder chocolate.

Six products have been recalled from Irish shelves since the outbreak started a few days ago, with Ireland, the UK, Belgium and other European countries affected.

At least 10 cases were confirmed here, with children among those affected.

All have since recovered, but there are still concerns that more people will be affected by the outbreak, with food poisoning being a major worry.

The main symptoms of food poisoning include:

  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea, which may contain blood or mucus
  • stomach cramps and abdominal (tummy) pain
  • a lack of energy and weakness
  • loss of appetite
  • a high temperature (fever)
  • aching muscles
  • chills

The symptoms usually start within 1 to 2 days after eating contaminated food. Symptoms can start at any point between a few hours and a few weeks later.

The HSE say that most cases, these symptoms will pass in a few days and you will make a full recovery.

The most common symptom is diarrhoea.

The FSAI said in a statement: "The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today advises that Ferrero is extending its current food recall to include some additional Kinder products due to a link with an ongoing food poisoning outbreak of Salmonella.

"To date, there have been ten cases in Ireland with the same strain of Salmonella responsible for the UK outbreak.

"A number of these Irish cases have involved young children, all of whom have fully recovered. The FSAI is warning consumers who may have the recalled products at home not to eat them."
