Infected Hangnail: Signs, Treatment, and Prevention - Verywell Health

Image
An infected hangnail is a form of paronychia , a condition in which the skin next to the nail is infected. If you have a small piece of torn skin hanging loose next to your nail, you likely have a hangnail. While an infected hangnail is common and can become painful, it is highly treatable. You also can prevent hangnails with good nail hygiene and reduce how often you get them. This article explains how you can spot and treat an infected hangnail at home, when to see a doctor, and how to prevent these infections. Hangnails commonly appear on fingernails but are rarely seen on toenails. Hangnail vs. Ingrown Nail A hangnail is not the same as an

Officials puzzled by an outbreak in Finland that sickened 800 - Food Safety News

Image
Officials in Finland remain stumped by a large outbreak linked to school meals. The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto), National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL), and local agencies are investigating the outbreak, which affected more than 800 people. The incident occurred in mid-August in Mikkeli, with mainly children falling sick. Ruokavirasto reported that examining food samples has not found any typical food poisoning bacteria, toxins, or signs of microbiological spoilage. Only sensory changes and differences in acidity have been observed in tortillas, which were suspected to be the cause of illness. Food tests have looked for bacteria of the Bacillus cereus group and coagulase-positive staphylococci, as well as their toxins, molds, and other microbes. Sensory issues with tortillas Based on a survey conducted by local officials in Mikkeli, including more than 4,000 responses, which was analyzed by THL, people who had eaten tortillas were three times more likely to

Nausea and Vomiting: Causes, Treatments, and Complications - Healthline

Image
Nausea and vomiting can be caused by many things, like pain, illness, and pregnancy. Seek medical care if your nausea and vomiting lasts longer than a week. Vomiting is an uncontrollable reflex that expels the contents of the stomach through the mouth. It's also called "being sick" or "throwing up." Nausea is a term that describes the feeling that you might vomit but aren't actually vomiting. Both nausea and vomiting are very common symptoms and can be caused by a wide range of factors. They occur in both children and adults, although they're probably most common in pregnant women and people undergoing cancer treatments. What causes nausea and vomiting? LAPD officers being treated for typhoid fever, typhus-like symptoms - ABC News

Image
At least one officer with the Los Angeles Police Department has contracted the bacteria that causes typhoid fever, Salmonella typhi, and another one is showing typhus-like symptoms, the police department announced on Thursday. The officer who had contracted the illness is being treated, and the other officer has yet to be confirmed to be infected, according to the LAPD. Both officers work at the LAPD's Central Division, according to a statement released by the department. Salmonella typhi is uncommon in the U.S. and other modern industrialized nations, affecting only about 350 Americans each year — most of whom recently returned from overseas travel. Worldwide, it affects an estimated 22 million people each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The police department is working with the city to "disinfect any work areas that may have been exposed," a process that is expected to be completed Thursday evening, the LAPD said in a statement.

Food Poisoning and Parasites From Sushi and Sashimi - Verywell Health

Image
Food poisoning from sushi can be caused by parasites such as anisakiasis or bacteria like vibrio or listeria. Symptoms may appear right away or within a few days, depending on what is causing the infection. The only way you can completely avoid food poisoning from sushi is to avoid eating sushi prepared with raw or undercooked seafood. If you do choose to eat sushi made with raw fish, you can limit your risk by choosing reputable sushi restaurants and asking about a restaurant's food handling practices. Nattapol Poonpiriya/EyeEm/Getty Images  This article discusses the types of infectious diseases that could occur from eating raw fish in sashimi or sushi. It also covers symptoms to watch for and who is most at risk. Sashimi is thinly sliced raw fish often served with sauces (like wasabi or soy sauce). Unlike sashimi, sushi does not necessarily involve raw fish. In fact, sushi simply refers to the small balls or rolls of

Cabarrus Health Alliances shares tips to stay health amid uptick of ‘stomach bug’ cases - WSOC Charlotte

Image
CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Cabarrus County Health Officials are asking residents to be extra careful after an increase in calls and concerns related to gastrointestinal (GI) illness or 'stomach bugs'. For many people, it's easy to recover from these types of bugs. But children, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised are at risk for more serious problems. Officials say people should not visit long-term care facilities when sick. Dr. Easterday is the Medical Director at Cabarrus Health Alliance (CHA). He says the county saw a spike in GI illness cases last year around March. This year, they are trying to prepare residents properly and avoid the high numbers. "In 2023, we saw the highest level of GI illness and norovirus during March, so we are asking our community to help us stay ahead of illness this year," Easterday said. "Most people will not need medical care and will not be tested for norovirus, but we assume that is what most people have if they ar

When certain poop colors are red flags, according to experts - CNN

Image
CNN  —  There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer for how often you should poop, but when it comes to what color your stool should be, expert consensus is much narrower. And deviations from it can be a cause for concern. "The most common color is brown, shades of brown," said Dr. Mark Corkins, division chief of pediatric gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The brown comes from the breakdown of bilirubin, a pigment created when old blood cells break down in the liver, and bile, which is typically dark brown or green and is made by the liver to aid in fat digestion, according to McGill University's Office for Science and Society. When bilirubin and bile are secreted in the small intestine during digestion, they ultimately turn the poop brown. This physiological process is also the reason why green is the second

What Causes Salmonella Infections, and How to Avoid Becoming Sick - The New York Times

Image
The bacteria are a leading cause of food poisoning. Here's how to avoid an infection. Cantaloupe, diced onions, cookie dough, granola bars, charcuterie — what do these very different foods have in common? They all have beencontaminated by salmonella, which sickens an estimated 1.35 million people in the United States each year. Infections from the bacteria — the most frequently reported cause of food-borne illness, according to the Department of Agriculture — can lead to symptoms such as fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain that may last for days. People often get sick with salmonellosis, the infection caused by the bacteria, after eating undercooked meat or other contaminated foods, but the microbes can lurk in many other places, too. "There's all these different pathways that can lead to human illness," said Dr. Louise Francois Watkins, a physician with the Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here's what you need

Stye Inside the Eyelid: What to Look for and Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
An internal stye is a small, red bump on the inside of the eyelid. It can be itchy and may be more painful than styes outside the eyelid. As it gets bigger, an internal stye presses down on the lid of the eye, which can be uncomfortable.  Internal styes are usually caused by a bacterial infection in an oil gland on the underside of the eyelid. They can last a few weeks and may go away on their own. If not, they can be treated with over-the-counter products, home remedies, and in some cases, medical procedures. This article will go over the causes of internal styes, how long they last, and the treatments available.  Maryviolet / iStock / Getty Images Stye Types An internal stye  is a stye inside the eyelid. This infection starts in an oil-producing gland in the eye. An external stye  begins at the base of the eyelash.
