Kids under 6 were increasingly treated for illicit substance ingestion after Covid-19's start, study says - CNN

Image
CNN  —  The outbreak of Covid-19 presented many dangers for children, and a new study suggests increased illicit substance ingestions were among them. In the first month of the pandemic in 2020, a 25% increase in overall ingestions occurred among children under 6 years old in the United States, according to the study published Friday in JAMA Network Open. Those numbers grew by 1.8% more per month than they did before the pandemic, the study said. "The immediate and sustained increase in opioids ingestions occurred during the largest ever rise in adult overdose deaths, largely driven by synthetic opioids," said lead study author Dr. Brittany Raffa, a clinical instructor in pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a National Research Service Award primary care research fellow. The study looked at data from 7,659

Sexually Transmitted Disease Epidemic Accelerates - Precision Vaccinations

Image
Atlanta (Precision Vaccinations) The World Health Organization, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and global partners have published a comprehensive roadmap for developing new vaccines against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Since its publication in 2014, vaccines for Mpox, human papillomavirus, and hepatitis have become readily available in the U.S. However, clinical advances for preventing herpes, HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, Epstein-Barr, and syphilis remain unrealized. These scientific shortcomings leave many people exposed to lifelong diseases.  For example, reported cases of sexually transmitted infections, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis increased between 2020 and 2021, reaching more than 2.5 million reported cases, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveillance data. Specifically, as of April 11, 2023, syphilis rates surged the most, i

New approach to nail bed injury surgery could significantly cut NHS ... - Nuffield Department of Population Health

According to a new Oxford University study, changing clinical practice for finger injuries in children could save the NHS £720,000 per year.  Nail bed injuries in children are very common. The subject of an information campaign by BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons) in 2017 to prevent injury, they are generally caused by a child crushing their fingertip in a closing door. In many cases surgery is performed to repair the underlying nail bed tear. Over 10,000 operations are performed in the UK alone each year.  Two treatment options are available during surgery. Children either have their fingernail placed back on the injured nail bed after the operation, or it is discarded entirely. Current practice sees about 96% of surgeons replacing the nail, but the new study questioned whether this approach had an impact on infection rates and whether it was cost-effective compared with throwing the nail away.  Abhilash Jain,

Extrapulmonary Pneumocystis jirovecii infection in an advanced HIV ... - BMC Infectious Diseases

Image
Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) develops mainly in patients with advanced HIV infection, newly diagnosed patients, and those not using antiretroviral therapy (ART). Dry cough, subacute fever, dyspnea, desaturation, and interstitial infiltration with ground glass opacity from chest imaging are presenting signs and symptoms that increase the suspicion of a diagnosis of PCP. Extrapulmonary pneumocystosis (EPCP) is an extremely rare condition [5] after the wide availability use of ART. Approximately 50–80% of reported EPCP occurred in advanced HIV-infected patients who did not receive TMP/SMX prophylaxis or received aerosolized pentamidine as prophylaxis [6]. EPCP was also reported in other types of immunocompromised patients such as patient with connective tissue disease, solid organ transplant or hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients and those with hematologic malignancy who receive immunosuppressive drugs [6, 7]. In this article, we describe the second reported case of a

Candida auris: 5 warning signs of ‘deadly’ black fungus as cases rocket - Daily Star

Deadly black fungus Candida auris has been labelled an "urgent threat" because many strains of the yeast are resistant to available treatments - but what symptoms should YOU watch out for? Also known as C. auris, the infection has been detected in over half of American states since it first emerged in the US in 2016. A recent study explored its rapid reach and found that the number of known cases have more than tripled across America between 2020 and 2021, and multidrug-resistant strains are becoming more common. Nearly half of patients who contract C. auris die within 90 days, according to The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The American College of Physicians (ACAP) have described the microscopic yeast strain as "concerning" because it is rarely detected in the natural environment, while The World Health Organisation has warned that fungal infections are becoming a "major threat" to public health. Transmission mainly occurs among residents

CDC: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Flour - AARP

Image
Contaminated raw flour was identified as the source of an outbreak of salmonella infections across multiple states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced. Although many consumers don't think of flour as a raw food, most flour is not treated to eliminate harmful germs that can cause food poisoning, making it unsafe to eat until it is cooked or baked. Consuming raw dough or batter can result in illness, and the CDC advises against children handling or eating raw dough that is used for crafts or play clay.

VCU doctors: Oral cancer becoming most common HPV-related tumor - CBS 6 News Richmond WTVR

Image
RICHMOND, Va. — April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and doctors at VCU's School of Dentistry are urging people to get their HPV vaccination. Early detection and prevention are the two most important tools to increase long-term survival against HPV, according to VCU assistant professor Dr. Sarah Glass. "We actually see the rates of oral pharyngeal cancer exceeding that of cervical cancer as being the most commonly diagnosed HPV-related tumor. So we're getting protection for boys and girls by using the HPV vaccine," Dr. Glass explained. Dr. Glass also identifies cancerous cells in her patients and patients around Virginia as a pathologist. HPV, or the human papilloma virus, is the most common STI that can cause warts. Dentists and professionals, like Glass, from the Virginia Dental Association are urging the public to get their HPV vaccination and a routine oral cancer screening at their next dental visit. The National Institutes of Health found the va

Special Report Each year, about 48 million people get sick from foodborne bacteria and viruses, leading to nearly 130,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths, according to Consumer Reports. ( These are 25 foods that can make you sick or kill you .) To compile a list of foods most often linked to food poisoning, 24/7 Tempo reviewed a report by Consumer Reports in which food safety experts looked at food recalls and foodborne disease outbreaks from 2017 through 2022.
