Boyd Specialties Recalls Over A Thousand Pounds of Jerky Due to Possible Listeria Contamination - Food Poisoning News
Boyd Specialties Recall of Jerky Follows Finding of Potential Listeria Contamination
On March 4, 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall of around 1,634 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) jerky products produced by Boyd Specialties, LLC, due to their potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The contamination was discovered after a routine FSIS product safety testing during a follow-up procedure when one of their jerky products tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
The consumption of food which is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause food poisoning. For healthy individuals, you may only experience uncomfortable symptoms, such as stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. While no one wants to experience these symptoms, food poisoning from Listeria can be much more serious than this for certain populations. According to America's Food Safety Lawyers, Ron Simon and Associates, "persons of advanced age, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems" are at higher risk for developing a serious case of Listeria infection. For further information concerning the risks of Listeria infection, visit their website.
The Boyd Specialties jerky products placed under recall include a variety of their different jerky flavors, such as their "Garlic Pepper" Jerky, "Straight Whiskey" Jerky, and "Carne Asada" Jerky. Some of the brand names under which the recalled jerky has been sold include Bacon Mamma Jamma, Durbin Farms Market, Gold Mine Jerky and Jerked Out. A full list of Boyd Specialties's recalled jerky products can be viewed here, along with their perspective labels here. All of the recalled jerky products can be identified by the establishment number, "EST. 40269", which can be found inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products of concern were produced on February 23, 2022, and have already been distributed to various retail locations in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
The FSIS regularly conducts recall effectiveness checks by contacting the producer of the recalled product to ensure that their retail customers have been notified and that steps are being taken to make sure the products are no longer available for consumers to purchase. Nevertheless, health officials are concerned that the recalled jerky products have already been purchased by some consumers and that they may still be in their pantries. Check the list of product types and labels to make sure that you do not have any of the recalled jerky in your house. In the case that you do, you should throw it out.
As of today, there have been no adverse effects yet connected to the consumption of Boyd's Specialities recalled jerky products.
